What a difference a quarter makes… Polycom (Nasdaq: PLCM) in January blew through fourth quarter earnings estimates, saw its stock bump better than 9 percent and rode the excitement that surrounded its RealPresence product line to record results.

Not so in the first quarter of 2012. The company has come back to Earth with a thud, posting net income of $15 million or 8 cents per share, down from $34 million, or 19 cents per share, last year, a 56 percent drop and its first decline since 2010.

And, said CEO Andy Miller, the company isn’t too optimistic about the second quarter. Polycom said it expects to earn between 20 and 22 cents per share on revenue of $367 million to $377 million. Wall Street was looking for a forecast of 25 cents per share and $387.3 million in revenue.

Miller said Polycom’s first quarter woes stemmed from slower than expected sales in Asia and North America; APAC sales were up 7.3 percent, sales in the America’s edges up 1.7 percent and EMEA revenues rose 16 percent.

“We saw government spending in several key geographies including China, Australia, India and in U.S. federal civilian come in lower than expected. This was combined with an already slow growth rate in North America,” Miller said, adding that he believed the industry is “in the midst of the company and industry transition from point products to solution selling. This mindset shift affects both our customers and our sales force.”

Customers, he said, considered more UC centric strategies versus point product or endpoint-only deployments.

“We believe this transition has many positive benefits for our company over the longer term that clearly created softness in Q1,” he said.

As to the over-exuberant sales projections for the first quarter, Miller said Polycom was “too optimistic.”

“Hindsight is 20-20 and we got ahead of ourselves, and our Q4 to Q1 had a larger sequential decline that we had planned for,” he said. “We overestimated the positive effect of Q4 year-end deal closure rates and we underestimated the work required to effectively ramp the North America sales team.”

Polycom cut its first quarter revenue outlook April 5, prompting shares to decline to $13.46 April 11. The stock closed at $12.89 Friday.

Verizon (NYSE: VZ), which in March launched a new offering that will allow users to conduct secure, high-quality video meetings across private or public networks on a variety of previously incompatible video platforms, is partnering with Orange Business Services on a broad telepresence play.

The deal will allow Verizon Immersive Video Exchange customers to collaborate with Orange Telepresence Community users across Cisco (Nasdaq: CSCO) TelePresence endpoints. AT&T (NYSE: T) in February announced a similar deal with Orange.

The latest deal helps streamline the infrastructure between the two telcos, helping to create similar scheduling, support, security and encryption mechanisms.

“Orange is committed to implementing interexchange services to make it easier for our customers to communicate via telepresence, regardless of network or exchange,” said Andrew McFadzen, head of International Network Solutions at Orange Business Services. “This agreement expands the telepresence ecosystem for customers of both providers… our objective is to make telepresence as border-free as a phone call.”

The trend for carriers to expand their telepresence interoperability is accelerating. This deal, in fact, is the second major deal with a European carrier that Verizon has made in 2012. This pact follows on the heels of one Verizon made with BT in February, which also is based on interconnectivity between the two carriers across Cisco’s high-end system.

Tata Communications, in January, said it would team up with nine other service providers– including Sprint (NYSE: S), Glowpoint (NYSE: GLOW) and TELUS (Toronto: T.TO) in North America, Safaricom in Africa, Telstra (ASX: TLS.AX) in Australia, Etisalat, Qtel and Mobily in the Middle East, and Neotel in South Africa– to interconnect their business networks.

I’ve long been a fan of the the FREE offering in France from Illiad, the disruptive telco. They were one of the first to offer blazing fast speeds, unlimited calling and all the TV channels you can watch with the deployment of the Freebox which is connected to DSL or Fiber networks across France.

Recently they began to be the fourth mobile operator, but to carry calls and data, much of the traffic was roaming on the Orange network. Well not anymore, as Free is now using WiFi offload to connect their smartphone toating customers over to any Freebox in France automatically, something pointed out by GigaOm’s Kevin Fitchard today.

Now before you get all excited that this could happen here in the USA, don’t. For starters the French regulations on tv channels made it possible for Illiad to offer all the same content that was previously either VHF or satellite that hits French soil. The laws also enable fiber and DSL operators to connect to the nationally owned Internet backbone that is strung by Orange’s parent, France Telecom, which is why SFR‘s Wanadoo is the number two player behind Orange for in home broadband. So by taking advantage of the public’s assets, Illiad has been able to then apply better technology and pricing to make this all happen.

The WiFi is using technology most likely from FON, as the founders of both companies are friends. FON pioneered the idea of a community network where members can use other member’s WiFi as they roam around the world. Along the way FON’s idea caught on with other operators allowing customers to log on at other users houses and many public hotspots. But the two big French mobile operators, SFR and Orange, never took the step that Illiad’s Free is taking. 

Once again, the upstart moves faster and smarter. Sadly the ability to do this kind of calling has been around for years. Client CounterPath has the BridgetPort Networks patents that enables Virtual Call Continuity, VCC, but the schism in the USA where the cable operators and the mobile operators have, and the internal battles at AT&T over wireless vs. wireline, plus the truely divided Verizon vs. Verizon Wireless have made things like this rather difficult here at home, even though Wi-Fi offloading of calls and data traffic makes total sense.
